Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Information about Recognition Assessment for TAFE Staff and Students
What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning or RPL is an assessment process that acknowledges the skills and knowledge obtained through learning achieved from work or life experiences that is outside the formal education and training system.
Your experience, existing skills and knowledge may be gained through:
- Paid or voluntary work experience - full time, casual, in Australia or overseas
- Hobbies or leisure activities
- Attendance at seminars, in-house training, conferences, short courses and workshops
- Private study or research
- Being a coach or mentor
- Unpaid work as a family member – managing events, planning community projects
By applying for RPL or Recognition Assessment, Swinburne can help you to match your skills and knowledge against a formal qualification or units of study (competencies).
Credit transfer
Have you completed accredited or formal training at another training organisation? Swinburne will recognise the units of study (mutual recognition) giving you credit transfers for same units in the qualification you apply for. The units must be identical or equivalent to those in the course you enrol in. For further information contact your Course Coordinator.
Credit Transfer Form
Recognition of Current Competency or RCC
This is another form of recognition assessment often required for maintaining currency of skills and knowledge for licensing purposes. Ask the course coordinator about RCC prior to enrolment.
Why apply for RPL?
Applying successfully for RPL may:
- Eliminate or reduce the need for training in skills already possessed.
- Save time in attending classes and completing unnecessary work.
- Save money (no need to buy textbooks or learning resources).
- Allow for the earlier completion of a qualification.
- Enable advancement to a higher level qualification if desired.
