Martial arts program gives students skills to share with community

'Be strong, be calm, be kind, try hard.' These four teachings are at the core of the Martial Arts Therapy program, which encourages young people to develop life skills they can share with their community.

Swinburne VCAL students from Prahran have completed the martial arts training and are now involved with passing on these skills to primary school students, encouraging healthy physical activity as well as a positive attitude.

According to Pierina Sassella, Swinburne VCAL teacher, the students have been given a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community and develop their leadership skills.
"My students have developed the self confidence to run their own sessions so they can teach others what they have learned," Sassella said.

"Their self confidence is evident in their ability to conduct sessions at St Kilda Primary School with little guidance from the program directors," Sassella said.

The Martial Arts Therapy program is run by representatives of the Croydon Community School. It aims to empower young people to reach their full potential, develop social skills and manage emotions while enjoying a fun activity.
