Preparatory or Pre-Vocational Programs

Swinburne TAFE offers a range of preparatory, bridging, support and English language programs designed to develop skills that will help students embark on further academic study or enter the workforce.

Courses in Transition Education, Concurrent Study, English as a Second Language, Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL), Work Education and the Certificate in General Education for Adults provide students with knowledge in general study skills and assists them to complete mainstream courses. On completion of these courses, students may be able to pathway into further study, such as certificate or diploma courses, or move into employment or further vocational training in a number of fields.

English Language Programs

The Spoken and Written English courses and Certificates in General Education provide students with an opportunity to improve their general English language skills, including oral and listening skills, as well as reading and writing skills. There is a focus during these courses on preparation for further study or work. The ESL course in Access or Further Study also prepares students from non-English speaking backgrounds for further study or employment. Some courses offer elective units in a variety of areas such as IT, office administration and business. Students may choose to continue into further study or employment in these areas.

Liberal Arts

Liberal Arts courses are humanities and social-science oriented courses that prepare students for further studies in the humanity-based area or to enter the workforce in a variety of fields. Graduates may move into employment that requires qualities such as initiative, collaboration and analytical thinking skills. The course also caters for mature-age persons who wish to study an arts, humanities or social science course at university, and who do not have a Year 12 certificate or equivalent.

Further Education and Pathways

Students may choose to complete further study after completing their TAFE course. Direct credit pathways may exist for students into a variety of courses. Other credit pathways may be available and further information can be seen here on the Swinburne Pathways website

Pathways Direct offers students completing a TAFE Diploma opportunities to apply directly to faculties and receive advanced standing. This option means you do not need to go through VTAC to apply. It is worth investigating this option at: www.future.swinburne.edu.au/pathways/programs/#direct
