Swinburne TAFE - Professional Development Day 9 August 2006

On Wednesday 9 th August over 430 Swinburne TAFE staff participated in an exciting professional development day held concurrently at two separate venues.

While 320 teachers participated in a Teaching and Learning Forum at Caulfield Racecourse's conference venue, 110 administrative, technical, specialist and support staff attended the Hawthorn campus for a program of special events.

Upon registration at both venues staff were given a ‘show bag' of goodies and Swinburne information, as well as a lucky number for prizes drawn in the afternoon.

At the Professional Development Day for administrative and support staff, attendees were welcomed by Joan Cashion. There followed an entertaining and personal presentation by Wanda Korndorffer, CEO of the TAFE Development Centre.

Joan & Wanda

Wanda told the story about her career development over the years from office assistant to CEO. Sheila Fitzgerald, Director, Strategic Development gave an informative overview on the Enquiry Management System. This enabled administrative staff to see “the big picture” and why some of the processes they perform are so necessary.

Sue Suckling and Judy Giles from Student Administration presented the changes that will be implemented in the next twelve months in Student Administration. From this administrative staff from Lilydale have since formed their own student administrative support and networking group.

In the afternoon the attendees had a smorgasbord of sessions to choose from. These ranged from the serious to the light-hearted, there was something for everyone. Workshops included Swinburne Green Office, Business Writing Skills, Finance One combo, WebCT and the very popular Humour Aerobics. Some participants enjoyed the opportunity to focus on their personal finances by attending “Build your Super”.

At the TAFE Teaching and Learning Forum teachers from across the Division met to share ideas, participate in a range of events and have a good time, judging by the feedback. Many of them were meeting colleagues for the first time as they are normally work at different campuses.

Alistair Crozier, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Director TAFE opened the day with a presentation on the importance of improving our teaching and learning programs.

He pointed out that the day's program had been designed to support staff to achieve this improvement. He also spoke of the Division's recent successes in the Victorian Training Awards and how this reflects some of our areas of excellence. Louise Palmer, Executive Director Educational Development then spoke of the changing role of the TAFE teacher.

Dr John Mitchell was the keynote speaker whose themes ranged from the diversity and innovation in TAFE across Australia to his concept of ‘saturated and unsaturated' ideas. He gave us the ‘big picture'.

Industry and student panels gave their views of TAFE. The student panel in particular was very entertaining and great to hear, ‘warts and all'.

After lunch there were 24 workshops for attendees who selected 2 from a wide range of themes including working with youth, industry delivery, RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning), flexible learning, student satisfaction, sustainability, superannuation, international students and more!!!

Both of the events concluded with prizes for those holding the lucky numbers. An iPod for a staff member at each event, movie tickets, meals from the Department of Hospitality and Tourism and plants from our Horticulture and Environmental Sciences Department. The prizes were a fun inducement to encourage attendees to stay until the end of the day.

Phillip McGlashan shares his glee with Kath White on winning the iPod at Caulfield.

A large number of staff worked both behind the scenes and ‘in front of' the scenes to achieve such wonderful events, and to cope with all the possible emergencies on the day. This included staff from Innovation in Education and the Professional Development Unit, in particular Liz Thackray and Alana Killen.

However the success of the day was also due to the enthusiasm and support from all those staff who attended on the day, as presenters or in the audience.

Feedback from the day has been fantastic! Next year we intend to hold an even bigger and better event for all our TAFE staff and special guests.

Reframing the Future

The TAFE Division has received funding to support a Reframing the Future (RTF) program on 'Applying Information and Research'.

For the project a series of seminars/workshops are in progress which offer key themes/subjects of interest to all staff and linked to our key
performance areas.

The seminars run for appoximately 2 hours and cover:

  • Graded assessment in VET
  • What research tells us about youth?
  • Flexible Learning Research: Online assessment and knowledge circles
  • Deep visioning: A visionary process for TAFE Specialist Centres
  • Research at Swinburne TAFE
  • Working with older workers/work life balance and career transition (2 different sessions)

Special guest presenters at each seminar offer opportunities to discuss how the research may be used at Swinburne. Swinburne Library staff are also participating by giving short presentations on resources, services and information to support the seminar topics
