A report commissioned by the National Staff Development Committee for Vocational Education and Training, “A Framework for Management Development in the National Vocational Education and Training System”, highlighted the need for a system wide focus on management development. In particular, the report stated that “The National Vocational Education and Training (VET) system will rely heavily on the management and leadership skills of its staff as they guide the system throughout the transformations arising from new conditions, structures and practices”.
The Leadership Development for Education & Training Managers program has been developed and implemented to address this situation. A limited number of places are offered to TAFEs biennially.
In 2008 Swinburne TAFE is establishing a Mentor Program as a direct result of the successful outcomes of the TAFE Development Centre Pilot - Coaching and Mentoring Program that we participated in during 2007.
The Mentor Program is also an acknowledgement that the Division recognises that it has many highly skilled professional staff who have the ability to lead and support other staff to build their capabilities in an environment that fosters growth and development.
