English Language & Learning Services
Swinburne University English Language Centre provides ELICOS (English
Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) programs for international
students who intend to study in Australia or wish to improve their English
for social or business purposes. The English Language Centre is located
on the Hawthorn campus.
Programs
A variety of programs including General English and English for Academic
Purposes are offered so that students may extend their English skills
to the required level. The study skills in English which are developed
include:
- Reading strategies
- Writing strategies
- Interpretations
of graphic information
- Note-taking from both lecturers and written texts
- Research and library techniques
- Seminar and tutorial strategies
- Language specific to business, engineering / science, computing / IT and Arts<
- Computer based skills
Language and Academic Skills Advisory Service
Our LAS (Language & Academic Skills) Advisers assist International students in the successful
completion of their studies. This
service is provided to students enrolled in mainstream TAFE and Higher
Education courses. Advice is given
in the areas of English, Academic skills, Mathematics & Statistics
and Information Technology. LAS
Advisors also work collaboratively with Higher Education and TAFE academic
staff who have students at risk because of inappropriate levels of skills
for their various courses.
Customised Study Tours
The Swinburne English
Language Centre can provide various Study Tour options. Customised Study Tour can be developed
based on the interests and requirements of a particular group.
The option has the advantage of flexible commencement dates and
program durations. Integrated Study Tours
An Integrated Study Tour provides the group with
the opportunity to mix with English Language learners from other countries
and to practise their skills with students from backgrounds different
to their own. This option provides the students with a 2
day orientation including placement testing, a campus tour and an orientation
of Melbourne city. Commencement dates for this study tour option are fixed.
Holiday English
The Holiday English Program is a flexible study program offered
to meet the needs of those with a variety of interests. Students can join the program on the specified
commencement dates and can choose the length of their course ranging from
1 week up to 5 weeks.The commencement dates are designed to fit in with
most Northern Hemisphere vacation times and may suit students who only
wish to study for a short periods during their stay in Australia.
